Bongeziwe Mabandla (South Africa)
He has been referred to as a “gem of musical ingenuity,” but the soulful urban-African folk styling’s of Bongeziwe Mabandla all resonate outward from his own personal experiences and observations. His heartfelt lyrics, honest delivery and matchless Afro-folk sound have made him a two-time South African Music Award nominee as well as a performer at festivals such as Primavera in Barcelona, Sukiyaki Meets the World in Japan and Rocking the Daises in his native South Africa.
Inspired by the sounds of Tracy Chapman, Simphiwe Dana and Jabu Khanyile, Bongeziwe has a rhythmically grass-roots vibe, but also mixes in elements of traditional Xhosa music, Mbaganga, soul, hip-hop and dub. Genuine and reflective, his music reflects upon his background and personal journey through self-discovery and awareness in post-apartheid South Africa. Singing in Xhosa and English, Mabandla proves he is just as diverse vocally as he is musically and lyrically.
Barely 30 years of age, Bongeziwe Mabandla has successfully established his own unique style. This, coupled with his ever growing international profile, has him primed to become one of the hottest new acts in the world.
